Anxiety, surely it’s just a matter of getting more exercise?

Anxiety / Stress / Depression / Mental Health

Anxiety and stress is in the news more regularly now and rightly so. Exercise has been labelled as the panacea for mood and anxiety related ailments. Daily exercise is a powerful tool that can drastically reduce anxiety and stress for a lot of people and help tip the balance towards a healthier life, both mentally and physically. Perhaps there is also a misconception that exercise alone is enough for all people to conquer their anxiety.

Mental health is a complex issue, it’s different for everyone. One person may feel completely at ease in public or taking part in an exercise class, another may have anxiety for just being outside. Confidence can play a big part in helping with one’s vulnerabilities, even if only going for a short run. It takes a strong mindset to be able to deal with these challenges.

For exercise to work for someone they have to understand themselves more and where they can push themselves and where they feel a need to hold back and take it gradually. Sometimes anxiety can be avoided if something is done spontaneously without letting the brain think about the implications. Other times, you have to build up confidence, taking it one step at a time. Do as little or as much as you are comfortable with.

Getting support is important, whether it be family, friends or from professionals. Try to be aware of others, ask yourself why they may act in a certain way, what makes them thrive, what makes them go back into their shell, watch, listen and learn. Be supportive, understand that everyone is different and unlocking a solution for one person does not necessarily mean it will work for others.
